Based at Rice University's Fondren Library, the Educational
Technology Research and Assessment Cooperative (ETRAC) will provide an
informed understanding of how information technology can support the mission
and goals of the university.
Many have speculated about the evolution of the university in the Information
Age, but such speculations have largely been based on anecdotes, assumptions,
and assessments of individual projects. What’s missing is a comprehensive,
objective understanding of the university in transition, an understanding
that takes into account the different research methodologies among academic
disciplines, the impact of technology on teaching, learning, and student
life, and the changing role of the library and information technology
organizations in supporting academic functions.
By analyzing and synthesizing current research in educational technologies
and practices, launching pilot projects, and widely communicating its
findings, ETRAC will facilitate better strategic planning, foster improvements
to teaching, learning, and research, and stimulate innovation.
